It is with enormous sadness and regret that we announce the tragic demise of our dearest friend and colleague, Suzanne Eaton. The police recovered her body during the evening of 8th July. The authorities have not yet completed their investigation regarding the events that may have transpired on Tuesday afternoon, 2nd July, and we will provide further updates as we receive information. We are deeply shocked and disturbed by this tragic event. Suzanne was an outstanding and inspiring scientist, a loving spouse and mother, an athlete as well as a truly wonderful person beloved to us all. Her loss is unbearable. Our thoughts and prayers are with her husband Tony, her sons Max and Luke, and with all her family.

TU Dresden and its Biotechnology Center also mourn the painful loss. “We were shocked to learn of the death of our dear colleague and friend, Prof. Suzanne Eaton. Our thoughts and condolences go out to her family and also to her colleagues at the TU Dresden Biotechnology Center and the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics. We have lost an immensely renowned scientist and a truly outstanding human being,” adds Prof. Müller-Steinhagen, Rector of TU Dresden.
Prof. Dr. Michael Schroeder, Director of the Biotechnology Center at TU Dresden, says: “We have come to know Suzanne as a lively and committed woman who made a decisive contribution to the development of our Institute. Her sudden and untimely death is devastating for us all. Our sympathy in these difficult times goes to her family and all those close to her. We will remember Suzanne as a remarkable person. We are profoundly saddened and speechless. Our hearts are with Suzanne's family”

Επιστήμονας του Πανεπιστημίου της Δρέσδης και του Ινστιτούτου Μαξ Πλανκ Κυτταρικής Μοριακής Βιολογίας και Γενετικής βρέθηκε νεκρή.
Με ανείπωτη λύπη και θλίψη ανακοινώνουμε τον τραγικό θάνατο της αγαπημένης μας φίλης και συναδέλφου Σουζάν Ήτον. Η αστυνομία ανέκτησε το σώμα της κατά η διάρκεια του απογεύματος της 8ης Ιουλίου. Οι αρχές δεν έχουν ακόμη ολοκληρώσει την έρευνά τους σχετικά με τα γεγονότα που μπορεί να έλαβαν χώρα το μεσημέρι της Τρίτης 2 Ιουλίου, και θα παράσχουμε περαιτέρω ενημερώσεις καθώς λαμβάνουμε πληροφορίες. Είμαστε βαθύτατα συγκλονισμένοι και ενοχλημένοι από το τραγικό αυτό γεγονός. Η Σουζάν ήταν μία εξαιρετική και εμπνευσμένη επιστήμονας, αγαπημένη σύζυγος και μητέρα, μια αθλήτρια και ταυτόχρονα ένα πραγματικά υπέροχο άτομο, αγαπητό σε όλους μας. Η απώλειά της είναι αβάσταχτη. Οι σκέψεις και οι προσευχές μας είναι μαζί με το σύζυγο της Τόνι, τους γιούς της Μαξ και Λουκ, και με όλη την οικογένειά της.
We have received confirmation on Wednesday afternoon from the coroner’s office and forensics laboratories in Crete that the body recovered from the cave on Monday evening is that of Suzanne Eaton, senior Research Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, and Professor at the Biotechnology Center of the Technische Universität Dresden. There is an ongoing homicide investigation being led by the police in Crete, which has taken comprehensive measures to ensure that the responsible party(ies) will be brought to justice. We can best support the investigation and ensure its success by helping to identify and pass on important and accurate information as well as avoid misleading or speculative distractions.
Our institute and all its staff offer our most sincere condolences to Suzanne’s family. We will remember forever the extraordinary scientist so caring and devoted to her family and friends and so beloved by us all. We remain in disbelief of this shocking and awful tragedy.

Το μεσημέρι της Τετάρτης λάβαμε επιβεβαίωση από το γραφείο του ιατροδικαστή και τα εγκληματολογικά εργαστήρια στην Κρήτη ότι το σώμα που ανακτήθηκε από τη σπηλιά το απόγευμα της Δευτέρας είναι εκείνο της Suzanne Eaton, ανώτερη επικεφαλής ερευνητικής ομάδας στο Ινστιτούτο Μαξ Πλανκ Μοριακής Κυτταρικής Βιολογίας και Γενετικής, και καθηγήτρια του Κέντρου Βιοτεχνολογίας στο Τεχνικό Πανεπιστήμιο της Δρέσδης. Υπάρχει μια έρευνα ανθρωποκτονίας που βρίσκεται σε εξέλιξη οδηγούμενη από την αστυνομία στην Κρήτη, η οποία έχει λάβει πλήρη μέτρα ώστε να βεβαιώσει ότι το υπεύθυνο πρόσωπο (ή πρόσωπα) θα παραπεμφθεί ενώπιον της δικαιοσύνης. Ο καλύτερος τρόπος για να υποστηρίξουμε την έρευνα και να εξασφαλίσουμε την επιτυχία της είναι μέσω βοήθειας στον εντοπισμό και στη διαβίβαση σημαντικών και ακριβών πληροφοριών, όπως επίσης και η αποφυγή παραπλανητικών εικασιών ή εικασιών που αποσπούν την προσοχή.
Το ινστιτούτο μας και όλο του το προσωπικό προσφέρει τα πιο ειλικρινή συλλυπητήρια στην οικογένεια της Suzanne. Θα θυμόμαστε πάντοτε την ξεχωριστή επιστήμονα τόσο στοργική και γεμάτη αφοσίωση στην οικογένεια και τους φίλους της και τόσο αγαπημένη από όλους μας. Αδυνατούμε να πιστέψουμε αυτήν τη σοκαριστική και απαίσια τραγωδία.
