Liliana Malinovska, PhD student at the MPI-CBG, is the winner of the science contest „FameLab Sachsen“, which took place on March 5th, 2014 at the Moritzbastei in Leipzig. Liliana convinced the Jury with two three-minute talks about “The protein quality system – or: Troublemakers in the cells”. Muhammad Umer Shafique, PhD student at the The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), reached 2nd place with his talk about perfluoroalkylic substances. Both won 500 or 300 Euros, as well as a media training, valued 1.600 Euros. They will compete with others in the final of the FameLab Germany on May 10th, 2014 in Bielfeld.
With lots of humor and creativity, twelve young scientists from eight countries presented their research topic in German or English to a jury with established scientists and communication specialists. They had three minutes time and where only allowed to use tools that they were able to carry on the stage themselves.
The FameLab Sachsen happened for the third time and is organized by the UFZ and the Leipzig University. The British Council is the patron of FameLab contests, which take place in over 20 countries. In 2011, this contest came to Germany. The international final will happen in June 2014 during the Cheltenham Science Festival (UK).
