The origin of life

Boehringer Ingelheim Fellowship to Juan Manuel Iglesias Artola

Juan Manuel Iglesias Artola, PhD student in the lab of Moritz Kreysing, received a Boehringer Ingelheim Fellowship. Juan is interested in the origin of life and will look at RNA molecules in small, asymmetrically-heated compartments, as they occur in hydrothermal vents. Using mechanistic insights of RNA self-catalysis, he will study how such a microenvironment can drive the self-assembly of self-replicating enzymes networks, as they might have preceded modern life.

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds awards PhD fellowships to outstanding junior scientists in internationally leading laboratories. The goal is to promote basic research in biomedicine by providing the best young, up-and-coming scientists with comprehensive support during their PhD phase.
